What is a hook? And how to write one that stops the scroll

The first line or the first second, the bit that decides whether anybody reads or watches the rest.

The hook is the opening. On LinkedIn it is the line and a half people see before they have to tap see more, and on video it is roughly the first second. Everything you wrote after it only exists if the hook did its job.

What a good one does

It makes a promise the reader wants kept, or it says something they disagree with, or it names the exact problem they woke up with. Any of those buys you the next line.

What kills one

Warming up. Saying hello, explaining what you are about to explain, or opening with a big word nobody says out loud. Cut your first two lines and read it again, because the real hook is usually sitting in line three.

How to get better fast

Collect the openings that stopped you scrolling, and work out what they were doing. How to write a LinkedIn hook that stops the scroll has the patterns worth copying.
